“I started to write because I wanted to tell my story — the story of a Muslim who was not, the story of a soul that could have been lost.”
Do We Worship Allah or Ourselves?
In his most powerful work yet, Mohammed Qamruzzaman asks the question that no one wants to ask but everyone needs to answer: Are we practicing the outer forms of Islam while losing its inner essence?
Drawing on over 80 years of life and faith, Qamar delivers a workshop-style guide that challenges every Muslim to look inward — to examine whether their faith is a living relationship with Allah, or a performance for the world.
“At its heart, the holistic message of Islam is living in conscious harmony with God, humanity, and the rest of creation. This book is a wakeup call. It is not about condemnation, but about transformation.”
Dr. Munawar HaqueFormer Imam, American Muslim Diversity Association (AMDA)
“As someone who spent half his life as a ‘cultural Muslim’ and then woke up to Islam as a complete way of life, I can testify to the truth of the claims Mohammed Qamruzzaman makes. This book ought to be of immense benefit to every reader.”
Azer ColakovicKhatib and Assistant Imam, Islamic Organization of North America
“Mohammed Qamruzzaman has hit the nail on its head when it comes to the predicament of the Muslim ummah today. It is very refreshing to see someone at 85 admit: we have some basic ideas about Islam very wrong.”
Azer ColakovicKhatib and Assistant Imam, Islamic Organization of North America
“Written in a lucid and methodical style, the book instills hope that it’s never too late to improve. ‘O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing.’ (Qur’an 89:27–30)”
Dr. Munawar HaqueFrom the Foreword to Islam Without Soul
“This book pours out the author’s soul. He shares his deepest thoughts, feelings, and worries with the Muslim community.” — Dr. Munawar Haque, Foreword
Narrating the moving story of his late son Binyamin, Qamar writes: “His life, and the way our community treated him, gave birth to this book.”
At its core, Islam Without Soul is not a condemnation — it is a love letter to the Muslim community, written by an 85-year-old man who has seen it all, and still believes it’s not too late.

Born in Patna, India in 1940, Mohammed Qamruzzaman — known to friends as Qamar — traveled to America in 1964. He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University (1969) and an MS in Management from Frostburg State College (1976).
He served the US Army for 32 years in Defense Program Management, retiring in December 2013. His family spans generations of service: a journalist daughter, a physician son, and a former US Marine who served in Fallujah.
Now at 85, his writing is a sincere call to reconnect with the spiritual core of Islam — not as ritual alone, but as a deep, living relationship with God.
A personal memoir from Patna to America — weaving biography with Islamic teaching and the story of a soul rediscovering its faith.
The complete Urdu translation — bringing Qamar’s message of spiritual rediscovery to Urdu-speaking readers worldwide.
